New beginnings

Attendance to the Google I/O conference 2008 has motivated me to renew/restore/improve some things techie.

Find some of them here or there.

Archive Blog

HERE'S MY MIGRATED BLOG FROM http://joelarso.googlepages.com ... The tools here at Blogger should hopefully help out my blogness, it wasn't much before - as you can see below!

Nov 6, 2007 - Sorry for not keeping up to date...here's something my supervisor Zeke threw together about our little mapping world.

May 21, 2007 - Stopped by Googleplex with Jare and am staying in Paradise for NorthTree training this week. Have some catching up to do...

Apr 4, 2007 - Paula and I had our wedding ceremony today, making our love official to the world (and stupid USCIS and DoHA).Just one witness and a very simple civil ceremony in Tahoe where we met. We're also moving back to San Luis Obispo and looking forward to having our own place together.

- Woot! : One Day, One Deal - For all you bargain hunters, this is the holy grail. Keep up to date with the WootAgent...to quote Lifehacker "this should help you avoid the 20-times-a-minute refresh of the Woot homepage" - for me and my Prather, CA dial-up, I can stop refreshing my Google Reader. :P

!!Mar. 23, 2007!! - The 20th, this last Tuesday was a big day...M Y B A B E I S C O M I N G ! ! ! Yes, finally - am I think it's one of the best things that's ever happened, Paula and I got the visa. We've been 6,500 miles apart for about 8-9 months now, but it's over. April 2nd I will be picking her up at LAX. What made it especially great is that it happened the same day as my Mom's birthday - so she was extra thrilled. We're going to be traveling around and seeing everyone and having a good time these next weeks...so we'll see ya if we see ya.

- I hope everyone had a wonderful St. Patrick's Day. As Ian made me realize, you/we/I should check out that book - "How The Irish Saved Civilization". He was telling me some cool stuff about that. And Ms. Kendall brought to my attention "geocaching" which I don't know how I had not been turned on to yet. See the link, but it's basically a treasure hunt with a GPS unit...did my first one today and am sure there will be plenty more!

Mar. 10, 2007 - So, come to find out - it's Daylight Saving Time - not Savings! I was wondering wtf this early time change was all about and stumbled upon this...come to find out this isn't new http://itre.cis.upenn.edu/~myl/languagelog/archives/003698.html .

- I'm thinking the Texter is pretty cool http://www.lifehacker.com/software/texter/lifehacker-code-texter-windows-238306.php, just downloading now and checking it out. The YouTube video from Lifehacker pretty much sold me though. BE SURE TO GET THE NEWEST VERSION WHICH ALLOWS 'RUN AT STARTUP' + MORE.

- We'll see if this Message Board thing I got going on the homepage will actually work. The "yaplet" didn't impress me much, but that's probably because no one has visited the page yet and messed with it.

I got sucked into cleaning up my MP3 library this morning and that was way to large of a task to be undertaking when I could be doing more productive things. I downloaded MediaMonkey for that - it seems to be pretty legit. I liked the auto-tagging from Amazon function and overall it was pretty smooth/simple. If you want to get down with your MP3 library here is a good series to help you along.

My 15,000 songs weren't phased yet by the Monkey yet however...but I still have hope.

Feb. 20, 2007 - Just bought my Beerfest tickets suckers!!! The link will get you to the number you need to call. Freaking $40 this year, agh - guess we'll have to turn up the training to really get our money's worth.

Lifehacker's Downloads-of-the-day is sweet. Keeps me in touch with the techie-dork things that eventually makes their way into the normal population of mom's, siblings, relatives and friends computers...I think I'd be months, if not years, behind the curve if I had never been turned on to them.
RocketDock - Mac-stylie shortcut/icon bar that will help clean up any desktop.

iTube - Let's you download YouTube videos to your iPod or as MPEG.

- Forget that old blog junk...I'm in Monterey, CA these days - working out of the NorthTree company house and doing some preparation-work for the Fire Management Plan I'm helping write. It's going good, I just wish the Central Coast wasn't such a miserable and unappealing place... :P And this ultra-fast internet connection really just makes me miss my dial-up in Prather!

Oh well, I'll get used to it. Headed out for a ride-along tomorrow with some CDF/CalFire folks so they can disguise me from the public behind a nice, red truck (don't want the neighbors thinking I'm going door to door for Guiliani campaign donations).
